Second album from Riverside, a band co-led by trumpeter DAVE DOUGLAS & saxophonist CHET DOXAS with bassist STEVE SWALLOW & drummer JIM DOXAS ‘The New National Anthem’ Honors the Musical Impact of CARLA BLEY, Including Three of Her Compositions, and New Works from Douglas, Swallow and Doxas The quartet Riverside debuted in 2014 with an album inspired by the composer and reed player Jimmy Giuffre. This latest release offers an appreciation of pianist and composer Carla Bley, who has been the life partner of band member Steve Swallow for more than 40 years. The album features spirited free playing, formidable ensemble interaction and new well-crafted compositions. The tracks transmit a palpable excitement and purpose towards this clear statement. The album includes new arrangements of Bley’s work as well as new compositions by Steve Swallow, Dave Douglas, and Chet Doxas written especially for this project. The title The New National Anthem comes from a 1967 composition by Carla Bley written for the Gary Burton album, A Genuine Tong Funeral. As Douglas notes, “What’s so special about the music of Carla Bley is that 50 years on, we’re still in need of that new national anthem.”
