“Callas in jazz”, an unreleased blend between lyric and jazz music with a tribute to Umberto Giordano and to one of best soprano’s majestic (maybe the most important) ever existed all over the world.
The great concert – unique in its genre –will be held in the amazing frame of the Giordano Theatre on April, 30, on the occasion of the International Jazz Day declared by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, for its 70th anniversary.
UNESCO Club in Foggia organizes the concert, and the Mayor of Foggia, Franco Landella, has immediately supported it considering it the best artistic expression to celebrate a worldwide event and to tribute the most renown citizen from Foggia, at the same time. Indeed, the Opera Jazz Orchestra, led by Master Agostino Ruscillo, will play two lyrics composed by Umberto Giordano: “Mamma morta”, part of the “Andrea Chénier”, and“Fedora” intermezzo.
The Orchestra is composed by 18 masters, specialized in jazz music and coming from all over Apulia.
Jazz is a particular musical genre born in USA during the first decade of the '900, the result of a merger between European and African cultures. It latterly widespread all over the world keeping being contaminated by others different cultures and that’s why it became an art recognized at international level and a way to communicate behind ethnical, racial, national and religious differences.
“Callas in jazz” is not only a tribute to the Greek artist and her majestic melodies shining with a new brightness thanks to her voice: the show actually gives us a new point of view on Maria Callas’ music instrument.
The Orchestra chose the trumpet (together with the E and soprano B flugelhorn) played by Master Leonardo Lozupone in order to reproduce Divine singer’s voice and her extraordinary expression.
The abovementioned aspect is a crucial for the show: the trumpet, which belongs to the Apulian musical tradition of marching bands, is valued and mixed with voice, passing from its original style to an Afro – America one, through continuous improvisations creating new sounds.
The unreleased blend between lyric and jazz music in the show is possible thanks to Silvano Mastromatteo’s innovative arrangements, who also composed an extraordinary and unreleased “Requiem in jazz”, and thanks to Mara De Mutiis solo.
Ugo Sbisà, renowned musical journalist for the newspaper “La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno” and one of the best jazz historyexperts, will present the show.
