L'Avare ou l'École du mensonge” by Molière in its version translated and adapted byValeriaCavalli, who also directs it, together with Claudio Intropido, will be performed at the Giordano Theatre on March 19th, for the current second prose season, realized by the Municipality of Foggia – Culture Department, in cooperation with the Apulia Region Government Public Agency.
The comedy is one of the genial French actor and playwright’s mostrenowned work. Moliere is the pen name of Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, (Paris, January 15, 1622 – Paris, February 17, 1673). The work is reinterpreted by“Quelli di Grock” acting company, that celebrates, with the above mentionedproduction, forty years of success.
Arpagone’s story still represents stinginessbecoming pathologic in the miserable and emotionless character, who only has vivid feelings for money, created by Moliere’s genius.
The five acts comedy, performed by Moliere at Palais-Royal in Paris, on September 9 1668 and published the next year, is inspired to “Aulularia” byPlauto both for the main plot peculiarities, and for the old main character’s psychological profile, Arpagone, hated by his own children, Cleante and Elisa.
Cleante hates his father for opposing his wedding with the poor and young Marianna; on the contrary, Elisa hates her father, because he means to oblige her to marry the old and rich man Anselmo, willing to marry her even without a dowry.
Cleanteasks his servant, Freccia, to steal the box where Arpagone, whomnobody trusts, has locked his money as he believes he can trade it with his beloved Marianna.
But his father accusesof the theft Valerio, his land agent, who has had a love affair with Elisa for a long time.
Anselmo is able to fix the situation, as he, instead of proposing Elisa, recognizes the beautiful Marianna and the land agent Valerio, his children, that he believed dead for a long time, after a shipwreck.
Once the both in love couples got married, Arpagone could have back his beloved box.
In the reinterpretation by Valeria Cavalli, the story takes place in a small, travelling and crumbling theatre and is acted by a group of actors, in a speedy rhythm full of scenes where all the characters are involved in a conspiracy aimed at love triumph.
Actors play and are at the same time part of the scene, watching the show as if they were part of the audience, whom they share emotions and concerns with.
