A study day dedicated to "Umberto Giordano and the Italian Opera fin de siècle" next Monday the 18th of May, in the sumptuous setting of the Fedora hall of the Teatro Comunale of Foggia named after the illustrious composer from Foggia.
The initiative is under the patronage of the Municipality of Foggia and is sponsored and organized by the Association of Social Promotion "MondOltre" - headed by Nino De Rogatis - Lucera with the Association "Together for the Opera" musical association by Maestro Massimiliano Guerrieri. Artistic coordination by Maria Paola de Luca.
The musicologist and pianist Ernesto Pulignano, along with Gabriella Del Vecchio, musician and writer, and the Maestro Antonio de Palma, will trace a historical and cultural aggregate of one of the crucial moments of Italian opera at the turn of '800 and' 900, a transition which introduced major innovations and was the first glimpse of turmoil that began to shake the Italian and European theatre scene.
In this context the image and work of Umberto Giordano is included, the influence of new tendencies in his creative process and his sources of inspiration, such as current realities, and other factors of a formal and artistic nature that many parts were in both opera librettos and in the compositions of his most famous works.
In the theatrical scenes of 'fin de siècle', authors old and new, opera singers, publishers and theatrical entrepreneurs, actors and actresses represent the Italian bourgeois who sit in the audience.
A multifaceted and complex theatrical world that in the decades of transition between '800 and' 900 is adapting to the changes imposed by the present day and the need to define new cultural hierarchies between educated and popular art forms, plus complying with a society which is set to be the mass.
The speakers will try to give a clear and thorough reading in areas of difficult and controversial interpretation, providing food for thought for the public.
The seminar is divided into two parts: from 9.00am to 14.00pm, and the afternoon from 16.00pm to 19.00pm, whilst in the evening, at 21.00pm, an opera concert will take placer with the tenor from Foggia Antonio De Palma - recently awarded the Giordano Lifetime Achievement in 2015 - and the soprano Miriam Tortora, awarded for the best performance of an aria by a Jordanian woman in the 17th International Opera Umberto Giordano competition on the 24th of April.
